It is Up to Us to Help Our Dogs to Understand

You can never be entirely sure what you are actually teaching to the dog. You think you might be teaching one thing but from their perspective they can be learning something completely different.

It is with this in mind that we must always approach our training with our dogs with an open mind and never assume anything that they understand us. This is a really difficult lesson to take into our training and keep with us through every moment. It is easy to become frustrated when they stop doing what we think they know how to do, not understanding how they are seeing it from their own reality, which can be so incredibly different from our own.

Knowing this it is up to us to keep grace and compassion with us in every moment within our relationship and through our efforts to increase our communication and training with our dogs.

So take that moment to pause when things do not go the way we think they should when they stop listening, when they stop responding , because there is a very good chance it is probably because at some level they are confused and/or distracted, and it is up to us to help them through that confusion.

It is important to remember that the more they are confused the harder it is for them because they get stressed within that confusion. Frustration on our part is not the answer.

It is a Challenge to Your Brain

Just imagine the change in the relationship with your dog when you calmly observe him doing something and realize this is just a behavior that you don't want. That this is not a struggle to force the dog nor is it as challenge to your authority. It is a challenge to your brain.

Understanding Submission

You might think that your puppy completely understands how upset you are especially as they cower before you, looking all so guilty. The reality is they don't understand why you are mad. Their submission is not about understanding and saying sorry no matter what you think. It is saying hey you are the leader of the pack and I am being submissive so you won't hurt me.

We train for one thing, but it can turn into so much more, if we just give them the room to explore the possibilities.

The Discipline is for You

Discipline isn't the answer at least not discipling the dog. The discipline is for you. You need to be consistent in your handling, you need to react to every situation as a leader, as someone who makes the wise, right choices in their reactions and interactions with your dog. You must not fail him. You need to never lose his trust. You need to become a wise leader that knows the right thing to do, each and every time.

We currently have 3 dogs here. An 11 year old, a 2 year old & a 9 month old. Impossible to train separately to go out so decided to follow your directions with 3 at a time. First 2 trios- called to door, told to wait and placed foot in front to block. Slowly opened door and when they went to go through I closed & repeated the wait command. After 3 tries they waited and went through when Released. 3rd & 4th time put foot in front gave command and they only attempted once. By the 5th time-.2nd day they sat and waited to be released with no foot and an open door. All 3 together!

Have started leaving Albe out of his crate during the day in a gated area and am also noticing a significant decline in anxiety. Bring on the next project please teacher!!!!!?

I like that even though this could be considered obedience training, the training is not a boot camp for dogs but based on communication and the relationship we have with our dogs .
